The American elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), also known as Canadian elderberry, is a hardy native shrub, typically growing between 1.5 and 3 meters tall. Its leaves are composed of toothed leaflets arranged oppositely along the stems. In summer, the American elderberry produces large umbels of small, fragrant white flowers, very attractive to pollinators. These flowers transform in late summer into clusters of purplish-black berries, edible once fully ripe and cooked, which add a touch of color and interest to naturalistic gardens.

In addition, native elderberries (Sambucus spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a wide diversity of insects and birds that use their flowers, leaves, and fruits.

Medicinal and culinary uses
The American elderberry has diaphoretic, laxative, and expectorant properties. The flowers can be used in infusions to treat colds and fever, while the berries, rich in vitamins A and C, are cooked to make syrups, jams, and wines. It is essential to cook the berries before consumption, as they contain slightly toxic compounds when raw.

Ecological roles
The American elderberry plays a valuable ecological role by providing food and habitat for various animals. The flowers attract numerous pollinators, including bees, and the berries feed birds and small mammals in the fall.
