The Witherod Viburnum (Viburnum cassinoides, syn. Viburnum nudum), also called wild raisin, is a native shrub of wetlands, generally reaching 1.5 m, with a rounded and dense habit. Its leaves are oval, opposite, medium green in summer then spectacularly red or purple in autumn. Flowering occurs in early summer, in the form of flat corymbs of small creamy white flowers. The fruits, initially green then red, turn blue-black at maturity and sometimes persist until winter. The species grows in full sun or partial shade in moist to wet organic or mineral soils, acidic or slightly peaty, found in bogs, marsh edges, and natural ditches.

Furthermore, native viburnums (Viburnum spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a wide diversity of insects and birds that use their flowers, leaves, and fruits.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The fruits are theoretically edible when fully ripe, but their flavor is bitter and mealy, which limits their culinary use.

Ecological Roles
Witherod viburnum is an important resource for wildlife. Its nectar-rich flowers attract wild bees and hoverflies in early summer. Its fruits are consumed by several birds at the end of the season, especially when they persist into early winter. Its root system helps stabilize wet soils, and the shrub provides excellent cover for small riparian wildlife.
