The black walnut (Juglans nigra) is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America, typically reaching 30 meters in height. Its trunk is straight, with deeply furrowed dark bark. Its compound leaves, 30 to 60 cm long, consist of 15 to 23 lance-shaped and serrated leaflets. Spring flowering produces pendant male catkins and discreet female flowers. The fruits are round, hard-shelled nuts, encased in a green husk that blackens upon ripening. This species is renowned for its high-quality wood, used in cabinet-making and carpentry.
