Red baneberry (Actaea rubra) is an herbaceous perennial found in undergrowth, belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, growing to about 60 to 90 cm tall. Its erect, smooth stems bear large, two to three times compound leaves, with deeply toothed segments that give a finely dissected foliage. Flowering, from spring to early summer, forms terminal clusters of small white flowers with long bouquets of stamens, above the foliage. After flowering, globose, bright red berries appear, very visible against the undergrowth. The species frequents fresh and humid forests, shaded edges, ravines, stream banks, and wooded embankments; it prefers humus-rich, fresh to humid soils, and light to dense shade. In Quebec, it is observed in many temperate to cool wooded regions, where it stands out for the brilliance of its fruits and the elegance of its foliage. Note: the berries are toxic to humans, which does not diminish their ornamental interest in a natural setting.

Ecological Roles
In undergrowth, red baneberry contributes to the structural and floristic diversity of forest communities. Its spring inflorescences, though discreet, offer nectar and pollen to various pollinating insects early in the season. In summer, its colorful berries provide a resource for several birds and small mammals, which help disperse seeds in the forest environment. Due to its preference for cool and humid sites, the species accompanies other undergrowth plants and contributes to the ecological fabric of ravines, shaded slopes, and wooded banks.
