Northern sainfoin (Hedysarum boreale) is a perennial plant of the Fabaceae family, typically growing up to 80 cm in height. It forms dense clumps composed of erect stems bearing many small, medium-green leaves arranged on either side of the stem. In summer, it is covered with clusters of purplish-pink to purple flowers, which are very nectar-rich and attract bees and other pollinating insects. After flowering, it forms small, flat, segmented pods. Northern sainfoin naturally grows in dry prairies, rocky slopes, and gravelly or sandy soils in temperate regions of Canada and the western United States. It tolerates drought well once established and prefers sunny environments.
