The swamp rose (Rosa palustris) is a native shrub of wetlands, often found along rivers, in swamps, and in wet meadows. It typically reaches 1.5 to 2.5 meters in height, with thorny stems and compound leaves composed of serrated leaflets. In summer, the swamp rose produces large, simple, fragrant bright pink flowers that attract many pollinators. In autumn, the flowers turn into small red fruits (rose hips), adding a colorful touch and providing a valuable food source for wildlife.

Furthermore, native roses (Rosa spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a wide diversity of insects and birds that use their flowers, leaves, and rose hips.

Medicinal and culinary uses
The swamp rose has astringent, tonic, and diuretic properties. Rose hips are rich in vitamin C and can be used to prepare herbal teas, jams, and syrups. In traditional medicine, petals and leaves were also infused to soothe minor respiratory ailments and mild skin irritations.

Ecological roles
The swamp rose plays an important ecological role, providing both food and shelter for many animals. Its nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, while the rose hips in autumn offer a food source for birds and small mammals. As a plant adapted to wetlands, it helps stabilize soils and prevent erosion in riparian areas.
