The thornless rose (Rosa blanda) is a native shrub to Quebec that forms dense bushes reaching 0.5 to 1.5 m in height. It is distinguished by its simple, bright pink flowers, which bloom in early summer and attract numerous pollinators. Its red fruits, called rosehips, often persist throughout the winter and add a decorative touch to the snowy landscape.

This species naturally thrives in prairies, forest edges, and well-drained sandy soils. Hardy and tolerant, it grows equally well in poor soils and dry embankments. Its ability to spread by suckers makes it an ideal plant for soil stabilization and the naturalization of open environments.

Furthermore, native roses (Rosa spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a wide diversity of insects and birds that use their flowers, leaves, and rosehips.

Medicinal and culinary uses
The rosehips of the thornless rose are rich in vitamin C and can be eaten raw or cooked. They are used to make jams, jellies, syrups, and herbal teas. The lightly fragrant petals can be added to salads or used to flavor desserts.
Medicinally, dried rosehips are used as a tonic and as a remedy for colds and respiratory infections. They are slightly astringent and diuretic.

Ecological roles
The thornless rose provides an important nectar and pollen resource for bees, hoverflies, and bumblebees in early summer. Its simple flowers promote efficient pollination and support the diversity of local insects. Its red fruits nourish birds, including robins and waxwings, while contributing to the natural dispersal of seeds. Thanks to its creeping root system, the thornless rose stabilizes soils and promotes the regeneration of open ecosystems.
