The dwarf red blackberry (Rubus pubescens) is a creeping, low-growing perennial plant, typically reaching up to 30 cm in height. It is easily recognizable by its slender, hairy stems, as well as its leaves composed of three intensely green, toothed leaflets, sometimes slightly hairy on their underside. Its small, five-petaled white flowers appear in spring, followed by small, red, juicy fruits that resemble miniature raspberries. It prefers moist soils rich in organic matter, often found in cool, marshy forests, as well as along waterways. Very hardy, this species is well adapted to Quebec's cold climates.

In addition, native blackberries (Rubus spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a great diversity of insects and birds that use their flowers, leaves, and small fruits.
