Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a perennial plant often feared for its stinging hairs that can cause itching when accidentally touched. However, this plant is a true nutritional and medicinal treasure trove. Rich in iron, minerals, trace elements, vitamins, and containing all eight essential amino acids, nettle is one of the most nutritious plants. It is also one of the richest plant sources of protein, making up 5 to 8% of its fresh weight (30 to 40% when dried). It can be consumed as a wild vegetable, renowned for its exceptional taste and multiple culinary uses. When harvesting, it is best to wear gloves to avoid irritation.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Nettle has several medicinal properties. It is adaptogenic, nutritive, astringent, tonic, antiasthmatic, stimulating, and depurative. As an infusion, it is widely used for its revitalizing effects and to help strengthen the immune system. Dried or fresh leaves support the treatment of anemia, thanks to their high iron content, and are known to promote healthy hair, nails, and skin. In cooking, young leaves, rich in protein and nutrients, can be cooked and incorporated into soups, stir-fries, or pestos, offering a pleasant herbaceous flavor. Additionally, nettle plants can be macerated in water to obtain nettle purin, used as a nitrogenous fertilizer and a natural repellent against harmful insects.

Ecological Roles
Nettle plays an important ecological role by supporting a variety of insects, especially butterflies that use its leaves as a food source for their caterpillars. In the garden, it also attracts beneficial insects and improves the biodiversity of the areas where it grows. Thanks to its fertilizing purin, it can also be an asset for enriching the soil and protecting surrounding plants against certain diseases. Cultivating nettle in naturalistic gardens allows one to benefit from its ecological advantages and high nutritional value.
