Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a perennial plant that is both ornamental and medicinal, once cultivated for the preparation of the confection of the same name from its root. It can reach two meters in height and offers a long flowering period of white flowers delicately tinged with pink, which add an elegant touch to gardens. Its flowers are edible, and the plant is known for its anti-inflammatory, antitussive, decongestant, and emollient properties. Marshmallow thrives in full sun and prefers rich, well-drained soil. The roots can be harvested for medicinal use from the third year, preferably at the end of the growing season.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Marshmallow has varied medicinal properties. Its roots, leaves, and flowers are emollient, soothing, antitussive, and anti-inflammatory. The plant is also used to treat gastrointestinal ailments and skin irritations. For external use, a preparation of the root or leaves can be applied to wounds and burns to promote healing and relieve pain.

Ecological Roles
Marshmallow attracts various pollinators, including bees and butterflies, thanks to its prolonged and abundant flowering. It thus contributes to biodiversity and supports local pollinator populations, particularly in naturalist gardens and riparian strips in Quebec. In addition, its deep roots help stabilize the soil, which makes it valuable for erosion prevention in wetlands or riparian areas.
