Red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea) is a large native shrub that thrives in rich, moist soils but can also adapt to various conditions. Reaching up to 2 meters in height, it is particularly appreciated for its bark, which turns dark red after the first frosts, giving it its common name. In summer, it produces clusters of cream-colored flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. These flowers then transform into small white berries, a food source prized by many bird species. Red osier dogwood is often used to create natural borders and is extremely useful for stabilizing banks and slopes thanks to its dense root system.

Furthermore, native dogwoods (Cornus spp.) are recognized as keystone plants for biodiversity in many North American ecoregions, as they support a great diversity of insects and birds that use their flowers, leaves, and fruits.
