The American hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana), also known as musclewood, blue-beech, or ironwood, is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It typically reaches a height of 6 to 12 meters and features a often short and winding trunk covered with smooth, bluish-gray bark, resembling taut muscles, hence the nickname "musclewood." The alternate, simple leaves are 5 to 12 cm long, oval with doubly serrated edges, dark green on the upper side and lighter underneath, turning yellow to orange-red in the fall. In spring, the tree produces hanging male catkins and shorter female catkins, which develop into small ribbed nuts surrounded by trilobed bracts, maturing in the fall. American hornbeam prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils and is often found in the understory of mixed forests, along watercourses, and in shaded areas of Quebec.

The American hornbeam plays an important role in Quebec's forest ecosystems. Its seeds serve as food for various bird species and small mammals. In addition, the tree provides habitat for numerous insects, contributing to local biodiversity. Its ability to grow in moist, shaded soils helps stabilize stream banks and prevent erosion.
