Self-heal (Prunella vulgaris) is a low herbaceous plant distinguished by its small purple flowers in compact spikes, blooming during the summer. It spreads easily in lawns, along roadsides, and in uncultivated areas, where it is easily recognizable by its creeping habit and dark green foliage. It prefers moist, well-drained soils and partial shade to full sun exposure, although it tolerates a variety of conditions, making it a robust plant for naturalistic or ecological gardens in Quebec.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
Self-heal has a long history of popular use, particularly in the treatment of wounds, ulcers, injuries, etc. It was also consumed as an infusion to treat fevers, diarrhea, mouth sores, internal bleeding, etc. The entire plant has alterative, antibacterial, antipyretic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, febrifuge, hypotensive, stomachic, hemostatic, tonic, vermifuge, and vulnerary properties. It has antibacterial action, inhibiting the growth of Pseudomonas, Bacillus typhi, E. coli, Mycobacterium tuberculi, etc. The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked. They can be added to salads, soups, stews, etc. They are somewhat bitter due to the presence of tannin in the leaves, although this can be removed by rinsing them. A cold infusion of freshly cut or dried and powdered leaves is used as a refreshing drink.

Self-heal plays a beneficial role in local ecosystems, providing nectar and pollen to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators during the summer. Its ability to grow in various habitats, including disturbed areas, promotes soil stabilization and the enrichment of green spaces.
