Water avens (Geum rivale) is a perennial reaching 30 to 60 cm in height. It produces bell-shaped, drooping flowers, typically pink to purple, between May and July. Adapted to wet soils, it thrives in wet meadows, stream banks, and shaded woodlands. The plant prefers partially shaded environments and grows well in poorly drained or marshy soils. Its dark green leaves are serrated, offering an interesting texture to the garden throughout the growing season.

Medicinal and Culinary Uses
The root is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, aromatic, astringent, diaphoretic, febrifuge, stomachic, styptic, and tonic. Traditionally, they have been used as a remedy for sore throats and respiratory infections. Geum rivale roots can also be used to create a chocolate-flavored drink when boiled. They can also serve as a condiment. The root is preferably harvested in spring or autumn. It was formerly used to flavor some alcoholic beverages.

Ecological Role
Water avens is a plant primarily pollinated by bees and, to a lesser extent, by flies and beetles. It provides valuable nectar to pollinators during the spring and summer months, especially in humid ecosystems. Its seeds, which cling to animal fur, aid in the natural dispersal of the species. Furthermore, the plant helps stabilize stream banks, playing a role in erosion control.
