Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is a perennial plant of remarkable beauty, native to the undergrowth of southeastern Canada. It can reach up to 2.5 meters in height and is distinguished by its dark green, finely cut foliage. From July to September, long, gracefully arching stems bear fragrant, clustered white flowers, adding an elegant touch to the garden. This spectacular ornamental plant is particularly well-suited to shade gardens, where it creates a striking visual effect. Black cohosh prefers rich, moist soil, typically found in shaded forests, although it can tolerate slightly sunnier locations.

Black cohosh is highly valued in herbal medicine, particularly for its roots which are used to reduce menopausal symptoms.

Black cohosh plays an important role in the ecosystems of shaded forests in Quebec, providing habitat and a food source for various pollinating insects, including bees and butterflies. By flowering during the summer, it contributes to the pollination of other plants, thereby promoting local biodiversity. Furthermore, this plant helps stabilize the soil with its roots, reducing erosion and improving soil quality. By integrating black cohosh into gardens, we not only support the health of ecosystems but also enrich the floral diversity of green spaces.

Upon receipt, it is recommended to place the envelope containing the seeds in the refrigerator until it is time to begin the germination steps. This cold period helps preserve seed viability and promotes more uniform and successful germination.

Black cohosh seeds require double cold stratification to successfully germinate (2 cold periods of 90 days interspersed with a 30-day period at room temperature). If sown outdoors in the fall, they will germinate in the second spring. Otherwise, once stratified, the seeds can be planted directly outdoors in the spring.
