Description

Minnesota Midget is a dwarf cantaloupe, specially selected for cool climates and short seasons. The plants remain compact and easy to manage, while producing 6 to 8 small, round melons per plant. Their dark orange flesh is juicy, sweet, and fragrant, with a classic, nostalgic melon flavor.

Its slightly rough skin and segmented ribs give it a traditional appearance. The fruits continue to ripen off the vine when harvested with their stems, which extends their usability.

Where to Grow Minnesota Midget Melon

Suited for zones 4 to 9, it prefers full sun, warmth, and fertile, well-drained soil. Excellent in raised beds, greenhouses, and sunny gardens.

Information for Canadian Climate

• Zones 8-9: direct sow in spring or indoor sow followed by transplanting.
• Zones 5-7: indoor sow 3–4 weeks before the last frost; transplant after hardening off.
• Zone 4: early indoor sow; greenhouse cultivation or warm microclimate recommended.

How to Grow and Harvest Minnesota Midget Melon

• Sowing: 2 cm deep; space 30–45 cm apart in hills or rows.
• Watering: keep the soil uniformly moist, especially during fruit development.
• Harvest: pick when the fruit easily detaches from the vine or becomes very fragrant; leave the stem for better ripening off the ground.
• Care: mulch to conserve moisture and limit weeds; ensure good air circulation to prevent mildew.
