Our Lettuce Mix is a unique blend of cultivated and wild lettuces, carefully selected over two decades in our coastal garden. This mix offers a palette of colors, textures, and flavors—from soft to crisp leaves in green, red, and bronze tones. Resilient to both heat and cold, it's perfect for harvesting as baby greens or mature heads.

Each included variety has been chosen for its rapid germination, sweetness, beauty, and ability to thrive in various conditions. A must-have for vibrant salads and a productive vegetable patch.

Where to grow the Lettuce Mix

Suited for zones 3 to 9, it grows in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Suitable for raised beds, row gardens, and containers.

History & Traditional Uses

This personalized mix reflects years of naturalized growth and selection at Metchosin Farm. It includes varieties from seed exchanges, heirloom cultivars, and wild lettuces adapted to our coastal climate. Cultivated for over 4,000 years, lettuce remains one of the world's most popular leafy greens.

Information for Canadian climate

• Zones 8-9: direct sow in February and again in late summer.
• Zones 5-7: indoor sowing in early spring or direct sow when soil is workable.
• Zones 3-4: indoor sowing then transplant after last frost; shade recommended in summer.

How to grow and harvest Lettuce Mix

• Sowing: 3 mm deep; space 15–30 cm for heads or sow densely for baby greens.
• Watering: maintain consistent moisture for tender growth; mulch to retain moisture.
• Harvesting: cut leaves as needed or harvest entire plants; successive sowings for continuous harvest.
• Care: thin early to improve air circulation and reduce disease pressure.

Tips for storing your seeds

• Select several vigorous and resistant plants.
• Allow them to flower and produce seeds.
• Harvest dry, fluffy seed heads into a paper bag.
• Clean, dry completely, and store in an airtight container.
• Viability: 4 to 6 years.
