Giant Orange Pear is a unique heirloom tomato, renowned for its vibrant orange color, pear shape, and sweet flavor, perfect for salads, garnishes, cooking, or preserving. Highly productive, it offers generous harvests throughout the season.

It pairs wonderfully with basil, marigolds, and onions, which deter pests and promote healthy growth.

Where to Grow Giant Orange Pear

This tomato thrives in full sun, in well-drained, rich soil. Ideal for greenhouses, raised beds, or large containers. It requires 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

History & Origin

This rare variety was "discovered" in 2010 in the fruit bowl of our friends Katie and Mark — we asked to eat one with our lunch and left with the seeds. Since then, it has become one of our favorites for its productivity and beauty.

Information for the Canadian Climate

• Zones 8-9: sow in January-February, transplant in April, harvest from late June to October.
• Zones 5-7: sow indoors late February to mid-March, transplant in May, harvest from July to September.
• Zones 2-4: sow indoors late March-early April, transplant after last frost, harvest mid-July to early September.

How to Grow and Harvest Giant Orange Pear

• Sowing: start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost.
• Spacing: 45 cm between plants.
• Watering: keep the soil uniformly moist without overwatering.
• Harvest: pick when fruits are well-colored, firm, and shiny.
• Care: stake if necessary; mulch to retain warmth and moisture.

Tips for Storing Your Seeds

Use the wet fermentation method:

• Choose the best fruits: ripe, healthy, and representative.
• Extraction: cut the fruit and collect the seeds with their gel.
• Fermentation: leave for 2–3 days at room temperature, stirring daily.
• Rinsing: when the seeds sink, rinse and drain.
• Drying: spread on a cloth or sieve until completely dry.
• Freezing: 24–48 hours to eliminate insects and simulate dormancy.
• Storage: store in an airtight container with silica gel. Viability: 5 years, up to 12 years under optimal conditions.
