How to choose the right lighting for your indoor plants
Your plants don't just "need light" in general—they need the right light, in the right place, for the right amount of time. Here's a clear guide, inspired by the Vert Un Jardin universe, to help you select lighting that respects your plants' rhythm and unleashes their full potential.
Why lighting truly matters
Light fuels photosynthesis. Without sufficient intensity, plants become leggy, yellow, flower little or not at all, and become vulnerable. With proper lighting, they develop denser stems, thicker foliage, and maintain vibrant colors—even far from windows.
The 3 essential criteria for making the right choice
- Intensity: "Low light" plants tolerate low light, but truly thrive only with proper intensity. Aim for close, adjustable lighting. The further away the lamp, the more the intensity drops.
- Spectrum: A "full" or "complete" spectrum (including blue and red) supports growth and flowering. Avoid overly warm (yellow) decorative lamps that light up the room without nourishing the plant.
- Photoperiod: Most indoor plants do well with 10 to 14 hours of supplementary artificial light per day, depending on the season. Use a timer for a stable routine.
Types of lighting and recommended uses
| Type | For which plants | Key advantages | Points of attention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full spectrum LED | Tropical, flowering plants, herbs, seedlings | Very efficient, low heat, long lifespan | Choose a grow spectrum, not decorative |
| Fluorescent (T5/compact) | Foliage, cuttings, herbs | Affordable, soft light | Less efficient than LED, tubes need replacing |
| Halogen/incandescent | Decoration only | Warm light | Lots of heat, low efficiency—avoid for growing |
Tip: Choose full-spectrum "grow light" LED lamps and position them 15–40 cm from the foliage (depending on power and species sensitivity). Gradually increase intensity and monitor the leaves.
Distance, duration, and installation height
- Distance: Start at ~25–30 cm for average-sized domestic LEDs. If leaves pale or crisp, move further away. If stems stretch and leaves dull, move closer.
- Duration: 10–14 h/day in winter; 8–12 h in summer if the plant already receives natural light.
- Adjustable height: Use an adjustable stand or chains to accommodate growth.
- Timer: Stabilize the day/night cycle without daily effort.
Adapting lighting by room
- Bright living room: Supplement in winter with a full-spectrum LED to maintain compactness.
- Kitchen/herbs: Narrow LED under cabinet, 12–14 h/day for basil, parsley, cilantro.
- Office/low light: Small adjustable LED close to foliage; prefer pothos, ZZ, sansevieria, philodendron.
- Seedlings/cuttings: LED or T5 near trays, adjustable height, gentle and uniform.
Reading your plants' signs
- Insufficient light: Leggy stems, small leaves, dull green, little flowering.
- Too much light/heat: Pale leaves, browned edges, crisping; move the lamp further away.
- Balance: Dense foliage, vibrant colors, regular growth—you're at the right level.
Putting it into practice in 4 steps
- Inventory: Note species, location, available natural light.
- Choose the lamp: Opt for a full-spectrum LED suitable for the area to cover (shelf, counter, living room corner).
- Install and adjust: Start at ~25–30 cm, 10 h/day, then adjust weekly based on signs.
- Stabilize: Add a timer and plan a quick check every Sunday.

Indoor Plant Lighting FAQ
- Do I need a "pink/purple" light for good growth? No. Full-spectrum LEDs with natural rendering work very well and are more pleasant for daily life.
- How many hours a day? As a supplement to a bright window: 8–10 h. Without sufficient natural light: 10–14 h. Adjust according to the signs.
- How far should the lamp be placed? Generally 15–40 cm depending on power and species. Start in the middle of this range and observe the leaves.
- Are decorative lamps sufficient? No. They light our eyes, not photosynthesis. Look for "full spectrum" and "for plants".
