Eco-responsible Guide to Preventing Infestations

Introduction

Before adding a new plant to your collection, a short period of preventive isolation allows you to detect any potential pests or diseases without endangering other plants. Rather than using the term "quarantine," we will refer to this as preventive isolation, lasting 7 to 10 days.

Why isolate your plants?

  • Quickly spot aphids, mealybugs, or mites before they spread
  • Observe the general condition (leaves, stems, substrate) without risk of contagion
  • Adopt eco-responsible behavior by limiting the use of insecticides

Key steps for preventive isolation

  1. Choose a bright and airy location
  2. Prepare a control tray or a detachable saucer
  3. Place the plant at least 1 meter away from any other plant
  4. Inspect daily to detect visual signs (spots, webs, insects)
  5. Note your observations in a small notebook or via smartphone
  6. Act at the first sign of infestation:
    • Rinsing with clear water
    • Occasional use of diluted black soap
    • Introduction of ladybugs or lacewing larvae

Duration and follow-up

  • Ideal duration: 7 to 10 days
  • Perform at least two complete inspections:
    • On day 3 or 4
    • On day 9 or 10

At the end of this period, if nothing abnormal has been detected, your plant can safely join the rest of your collection.

Eco-responsible tips

  • Prioritize mechanical or biological solutions before chemical treatments
  • Recycle rinse water to water other non-sensitive plants
  • Sterilize your tools (pruning shears, knife) between each use
  • Enrich your substrates with homemade compost or natural amendments

Additional avenues

  • Create a yellow sticky trap to monitor flying insects
  • Introduce "miracle" plants (catnip, marigold) that attract beneficial insects
  • Document your infestation cases to refine your methods over the seasons

You can also explore sterile cutting methods or discover the benefits of plant purins (nettle, horsetail) as a preventive treatment.
