After flowering, globose, bright red berries appear, very visible against the undergrowth. The species frequents fresh and humid forests, shaded edges, ravines, stream banks, and wooded embankments; it prefers humus-rich, fresh to humid soils, and light to dense shade. In Quebec, it is observed in many temperate to cool wooded regions, where it stands out for the brilliance of its fruits and the elegance of its foliage.
